About the Trip

One of the most popular majors on campus, FHU’s photography program offers numerous opportunities to travel and study abroad. This biennial trip to Costa Rica, typically taking place during spring break, allows students to photograph the animals, environment, people and culture of one of the region’s most sought after destinations—Tamarindo. Spots are limited to just 12 students, so early registration is encouraged.

Important Highlights

  • Visit agricultural towns of Pital and Boca Tapada.
  • Stay at the Laguna del Lagarto Lodge.
  • Explore trails through 1,250 acres of tropical rainforest.
  • Canoe on one of the property's three lagoons, and take excursions to neighboring villages.
  • Practice a variety of styles, including wildlife, portrait, landscape and architectural photography.
  • Participate in a four-hour canoe trip on the San Carlos and San Juan Rivers along the border with Nicaragua.
  • Venture to the top of one of Costa Rica's active volcanoes, Volcán Poás, if the crater observation area is open to the public.
  • Spend time on the Pacific coast interacting with the local population and capturing on film the unique ecological and cultural heritage of the country.
