About the Trip

May 29-June 13, 2026

Join FHU students, alumni and members of the FHU family on a two-week adventure to Romantic England, led by experienced travelers and FHU staff members, Dr. John and Debbie McLaughlin. The trip includes time in the cities of London, Bath and York. The group also spends time hiking and walking in two of England’s favorite areas of great natural beauty–the Lake District and the Peak District. Participants will explore picturesque villages and magnificent estates, wander beautiful gardens and enjoy afternoon tea together.

Important Highlights

  • Learn how England’s Lake District has inspired writers and painters for centuries with a seminar taught by a curator of the Wordsworth Trust.
  • Enjoy the picturesque village of Chawton and visit Jane Austen’s home.
  • Explore magnificent Stourhead Gardens and see filming locations from 2005’s “Pride & Prejudice."
  • Visit the impressive York Minster cathedral and stately Chatsworth House (home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire).
  • Marvel at the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales (seen in PBS’s “All Creatures Great and Small”).
  • Travel as locals do with a combination of cross-country trains, coaches, regional buses and the London Underground.
  • Enjoy afternoon tea together.
  • Wonder at the ancient stone circles of Stonehenge and Castlerigg.
  • Enjoy a full free day in London and free time in each location we visit, and truly make the experience your own.
  • Explore iconic London, beautiful Bath and historic York.
  • Take the optional “Jane Eyre” hike through the stunning Peak District from the village of Hathersage to Stanage Edge or the “Cat Bells” hike overlooking Derwentwater in the beautiful Lake District.

Guided walking tour; free afternoon to visit Bath sites on your own (Roman Baths, #1 Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey, Jane Austen Centre).

Travel by coach to Stourhead Gardens and Stonehenge.

Peak District

- June 5, 2026

Train to the village of Hathersage. Explore Hathersage or join the optional hike to Stanage Edge (rocky outcropping featured in the 2005 "Pride & Prejudice").

Travel by coach to the charming village of Bakewell to shop and sample Bakewell tarts. Visit Chatsworth House (featured as Pemberley in the 2005 "Pride and Prejudice").

Morning worship service then train to the historic city of York. Visit York Minster, York Market, medieval city walls and The Shambles, York's most famous street.

Coach Day Trip to the Yorkshire Dales. Stops include the village of Haworth, Bolton Abbey and the magnificent scenery from PBS's "All Creatures Great and Small."

Travel by train to England’s Lake District. Optional evening walk to Castlerigg stone circle.

Travel to the village of Grasmere, learn about its famous gingerbread, and visit William Wordsworth’s home for a tour and seminar.

Your choice: Cat Bells hike, ride the Keswick Launch, shop the Keswick market, visit a surrounding village.

Travel to Buttermere over the dramatic Honister Pass. Optional easy walk around Buttermere; train back to London.
